Missions
Are you passionate about the enzymatic reactions of anaerobic microbes and keen to contribute to excellence in scientific research? Join us as a post-doc/researcher on a two-year fixed-term contract, with a possible extension, and be part of the IBS/IRIG Institute!
The position is available to investigate the enzymatic chemistry orchestrated in the microbial anaerobic carbon cycling. The offer is part of the ERC Project “EnLightEn, ” which is devoted to understanding the molecular basis of methanogenesis and methanotrophy in non-isolated anaerobic archaea. The position will be hosted in the newly established Microbial Metabolism team, with a preferred starting date of late summer 2026.
Your tasks will include
- Preparing microbial biomass (microbial enrichments cultured in flasks or bioreactors, as well as environmental samples) ,
- Extract the proteins involved in catabolic processes and purify them using our oxygen-free process,
- Characterise the proteins using biochemical, biophysical and structural tools,
- Analyse the data obtained to elucidate the reaction mechanisms,
- Present these findings in the form of scientific articles.
This unconventional approach, which circumvents the barrier posed by microbial isolation, enables us to understand the molecular mechanisms of native enzymes involved in the conversion of carbon-based molecules, with potential applications in industrial chemistry. EnLightEn will open up a new field of research to characterise functional dark matter, which can then be applied to other metabolic processes and offer an unprecedented insight into the molecular tricks employed by the microbial world.
Profil recherché
The ideal postdoc candidate must hold a PhD in protein biochemistry and have a solid background in structural biology, including the purification of native enzymes, their crystallization, X-ray crystallographic data collection, structural analyses, and enzyme functional assay. Candidates with experience in anaerobic handling, from microbial production to the crystallization/characterization of O2-sensitive proteins, are strongly encouraged to apply and will be treated as a priority. Cultivation of anaerobic microbes and skills in cryo-electron microscopy are welcomed but not mandatory. Interest in metalloenzymes, extremozymes, and the reaction mechanisms involved in microbial metabolic pathways is fundamental to developing at maximum potential in the laboratory.
You will need to demonstrate an open mind and a high degree of scientific rigour. You must be fluent in English, which will enable you to communicate effectively with the team and write scientific articles
